At the dawn of the 20th century, Westfield found itself with the nickname “the Whip City”, and for good reason -- with a 98% worldwide share of the buggy whip market, it had a virtual international monopoly.  How could such a small, out-of-the-way town achieve such phenomenal success?  Start with transportation, with a canal system providing entry for raw materials (leather), and shipping of finished products.  The river and canal system also provided power for the mills.  The canals were eventually supplanted by rail, being on the main line between Albany and Boston. Westfield also saw a major influx of skilled craftsmen from Europe at this time.  Most important, though, was the dedication and commitment to quality.

Shift forward 100 years. The buggy whips are all but gone (tried whipping your car lately?).  Only one factory and one leather braider remain. The canals are gone. Most of the rail is gone.  Yet, Westfield is going stronger than ever. The canals and rail have been replaced by the MassPike, I-91, US-20 and US-5.  Westfield is quickly becoming the city of choice for major distribution centers.  In the midst of statewide fiscal crisis, Westfield held it’s ground, avoiding the massive layoffs of policemen, firemen and teachers of the surrounding towns. Westfield maintained it’s history and tradition of excellence.
